I don't have any critical insights into the horror genre (and the only other horror movie I've watched since then that I really liked was THE RING - it scared me) and I probably won't acquire any but a movie that surprises is always welcome to me and I think SCREAM served up a lot of moments that were unexpected.Rachelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12471937819219493034noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8121497265402071351.post-87611217867946622052011-04-23T11:14:40.682-07:002011-04-23T11:14:40.682-07:00Believe me Vern that comment WAS NOT DIRECTED TOWA...Believe me Vern that comment WAS NOT DIRECTED TOWARDS YOU.

Honest and for true. In those screengrabs the mask even looks scary again.

I sure hope the "wow" review you refer to wasn't mine. I know it's a minor point. I just think the world has changed to where the trivia could be slightly more challenging now. Excellent point linking NOES with Scream wouldn't have thought of it. But you're right. Man Craven goes gunning for those innocents doesn't he?

I actually really liked Scream 4, much more than either of the sequels. I didn't think it was that bad as far as gore goes. I mean it's definitely R, but there's nothing as upsetting as this scene.

@ Neil: Yeah Craven really is a profoundly lazy filmmaker. When he's not engaged. And even when he is engaged he is occasionally just plain crazy.

@ Emily: Yeah I remember talking my dad into letting me rent this when my Mom was out of town. Scream was a gateway drug for a lot of people our age that is for sure.

@ JD: Many thanks sir. I don't know, I've never enjoyed Scream 2, though it has a killer opening sequence as well.

We need to send a memo to horror filmmakers. Ditto this film which is easily the best entry in the franchise (SCREAM 2 is excellent also. I think that Craven gets a lot of mileage from how inately likable Drew Barrymore is. You just instantly like her and really don't want to see her killed, esp. in the gruesome way that happens in this sequence. You really nailed what makes this scene work oh so well.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8121497265402071351.post-75490529084965186692011-04-21T04:16:14.924-07:002011-04-21T04:16:14.924-07:00Love this post! Earlier today before I e...Just-wow, Bryce. Awesome.
Earlier today before I even turned on the computer, I was hanging out with one of my best friends (420, you know)and we were talking about this very subject--that horror movies often make the victims seem like assholes,as if they then somehow DESERVE to die? Twisted movie logic, which this scene completely upends. Casey's a total sweetheart and,as brilliant as this scene is,I find it almost un-watchable (usually pick up a book and turn down the sound during this part when it's on TNT, like it was the other night).
Conflicting feelings in that, if violence is going to be shown, don't throw it out to the morons who live for that stuff, instead make it real, make me uncomfortable.
But then again, it's just too real, this scene-I can't bear it.(Really)
The closest runner up I can come up with is Tina's death in the original NOES: She has some seriously absentee parenting going on, and it's clear her background isn't loaded w/money.She's a nice normal girl with more than her share of problems... And some psycho weirdo in her dreams is stalking her.
So...I don't know. I'll probably see Scre4m pretty soon (however it's spelled),because I saw the first two in the theater with some of my best friends and we had a great time, but from what I've read, it's even more grisly than the original, and I guess it's all starting to seem a bit...distasteful. Still, who doesn't love Sidney? Here's hoping she kicks the killer's ass!
Thanks for another killer post!AKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02084216883655540363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8121497265402071351.post-43308454455185486162011-04-20T22:50:03.148-07:002011-04-20T22:50:03.148-07:00Bravo scene exposition, Bryce.
